FAQ

How long does the FAANG security engineer interview process take from application to offer?

The full process at Google takes 8-12 weeks from application to offer, with 2-3 weeks between each round. Meta typically completes loops in 4-6 weeks with all interviews scheduled in a single day. Amazon runs the fastest process at 3-5 weeks, with the bar-raiser round often scheduled within days of the technical rounds. If timeline matters, Amazon is fastest; if you need negotiation leverage, Google’s longer process gives you more time to collect competing offers.

What security certifications help most for FAANG security engineer interviews?

AWS offers the highest ROI for AWS-targeting roles (Solutions Architect Security Specialty, Security Specialty cert). For Google, the Professional Cloud Security Engineer certification aligns with interview content but doesn’t replace hands-on experience. At Meta, certifications carry minimal weight—interviewers evaluate demonstrated experience over credentials. CISSP and CISM are neutral signals across all three; they don’t hurt but don’t differentiate.

Is FAANG or AWS better for mid-career security engineers looking to switch focus areas?

FAANG offers more explicit role mobility at the senior level (L5 at Google, E5 at Meta). Internal transfer processes allow security engineers to move between tracks (AppSec to Detection Engineering, for example) after 18 months in good standing. AWS internal mobility is more constrained by team headcount and manager approval. If you want to experiment with different security domains, FAANG provides more structured pathways. If you’re already aligned on cloud security and want depth, AWS offers deeper specialization at comparable compensation.
